Rural and Lifestyle Fencing Across Otago

A fence that holds stock, on ground that fights back

Rural fencing is judged by one thing: does the stock stay where you put them. Everything else - the wire spacing, the post centres, the strainers, the depth - is in service of that. A fence line that looks fine and lets a mob through in the first week has failed, however neat it looks.

We fence lifestyle blocks and working farms right across Otago: the Taieri around Outram and Mosgiel, south through Milton and Balclutha into Clutha dairy country, inland to Lawrence, and north to Waikouaiti and Palmerston. Different ground, different stock, different answers. Wet Taieri paddocks want a different post and a different depth from dry Clutha hill country, and hill contours want a fence that follows the land rather than a straight line drawn on a plan.

What we build

Sheep fencing

Standard sheep fencing built to the class of stock you actually run, with the netting or wire spacing to match. Lambs test the bottom, so the bottom is where the work goes - close spacing low down, tight to the ground, and battens where the contour needs them.

Cattle and dairy fencing

Cattle push. Dairy fencing needs strength at the posts, correct strainer and stay assemblies at every corner and end, and gateways wide enough and tough enough for daily traffic. We build lanes, races and paddock subdivisions as well as boundaries, and we can set the fence up for electric wire if that is how you run it.

Deer fencing

Deer fencing is its own trade. The height, the netting specification, the strain and the gate detail are all different, and cutting corners on any of them means you lose animals. We build to deer spec when the job calls for it rather than pretending a tall sheep fence will do.

Post and rail

Post and rail is the fence for a road frontage, a house paddock, a horse yard or the entry to a lifestyle block. Two, three or four rail in timber, with netting behind it where it needs to be stock-proof or safe around children. It transforms how a rural property looks from the road, which matters if you are ever selling.

Gateways

The gateway is the most used and most abused part of any farm fence. We hang farm gates on properly braced posts, sized for the width and the traffic, so they still swing and still latch after a wet Otago winter. Wide gateways for machinery, and pedestrian access where you need it, get planned in at quote time.

Netting, wire and repairs

Netting fences, plain and high tensile wire, and the ordinary business of keeping a fence line working: replacing rotted posts, restraining a sagging run, rebuilding a corner assembly, repairing storm and slip damage. Small maintenance jobs are welcome - we would rather do your repair now than lose the whole boundary contract later.

Lifestyle blocks

Lifestyle blocks are their own thing. You want stock-proof fencing on part of it and a tidy, domestic-looking boundary on the rest, plus somewhere the dog cannot get through. Often there is a house paddock, a garden, and a road frontage all wanting different treatments on the same property. We can do the whole lot in one visit - including the house fencing, a retaining wall where the drive cuts into a bank, and a deck off the house.

Fence line maintenance

If you have kilometres of fence, the economic move is not to replace it all - it is to keep on top of it. We will walk a fence line with you, tell you honestly what has a decade left in it and what does not, and price the work in the order that makes sense. That is a much cheaper conversation than the one that starts with a mob on the road.
