Local, and local matters in fencing
Being close by is not just about the travel charge. It means we know what the ground does at your address, we can get back to you if something needs looking at, and we are quoting on experience of that soil, that slope and that wind rather than on an average.
Below is every area we cover as a matter of course, and what tends to be different about fencing in each of them. If you are outside this list, ring anyway - we are happy to travel about an hour out of Dunedin for the right job, and the worst that happens is we say no.
Fencing across Dunedin, the Taieri and South Otago
We are based at Allanton, between Mosgiel and Outram, and we work right across Dunedin and Otago - about an hour further out for the right job.
Fencing in Mosgiel
Our own back yard. Flat Taieri Plain sections, plenty of newer subdivisions, and a lot of boundary fences going up between brand new neighbours.
Fencing in Dunedin
City sections are steep, so a fence and a retaining wall are often the same job. Add salt-laden wind off the harbour and material choice starts to matter.
Fencing in Fairfield
Established streets between Dunedin and Mosgiel, where most of the work is replacing a tired fence rather than putting up the first one.
Fencing in Outram
Small farms and lifestyle blocks on the Taieri. Stock-proof fencing, gateways wide enough for a tractor, and long runs across paddocks.
Fencing in Brighton
Right on the coast south of the city. Wind and salt are the deciding factors here, and a fence that ignores them does not last.
Fencing in Port Chalmers
Harbourside and exposed. Galvanising, fixings and post treatment all get chosen for salt air rather than for looks.
Fencing in Portobello
Out on the Otago Peninsula, where access can be tight and everything has to be carried in past someone's garden.
Fencing in Waikouaiti
North of Dunedin on the coast - a mix of farmland, township sections and holiday houses that sit empty half the year.
Fencing in Palmerston
Up towards the North Otago boundary. Longer farm fence lines, and drives worth doing in one hit rather than in pieces.
Fencing in Milton
South on the Tokomairiro plain. Farm fencing, township boundary fences and repairs after a hard winter.
Fencing in Balclutha
Clutha dairy country. Big fence lines, serious gateways and stock that will find any weak spot you leave.
Fencing in Lawrence
Inland Clutha hill country. Sloping ground, rock, and fences that have to follow a contour rather than a straight line.
What changes from one place to the next
Coastal and harbourside
Brighton, Port Chalmers, Portobello and Waikouaiti all sit in salt air, and salt decides material choice. Galvanising grade, fixing type and post treatment all get specified for the exposure rather than for the price list, because the wrong screw in a coastal fence is a rust streak within two years and a failure within ten. Wind matters as much - a solid two-metre panel on an exposed coastal boundary is a sail, and often an alloy or slatted fence that lets air through is the longer-lasting answer.
The Taieri Plain
Mosgiel, Outram and Allanton sit on flat, often wet ground. The plain drains slowly, so post depth, backfill and treatment level are what count here. It is also where most of the new subdivisions are, which means a lot of boundary fences between brand new neighbours - and those are worth getting right first time, because they are shared.
Dunedin city sections
Steep, and often the fence and the retaining wall are one job. Panels step down the fall rather than following it, and where the ground has to be held up first, that gets designed and drained properly or the fence above it goes out of line within a few winters. Access is the other Dunedin issue - a lot of city sections mean everything is carried in by hand.
South Otago and inland Clutha
Milton, Balclutha and Lawrence are farming country, so most of the work is rural fencing: long fence lines, serious gateways, and stock that will find any weak spot. Lawrence adds hill contours and rock, which means a fence that follows the land rather than a straight line on a plan, and post holes that are not always where you would like them to be.
North to Palmerston
Palmerston is the far end of our normal range, up towards the North Otago boundary. Long farm fence lines and a decent drive, so it is worth doing the whole job in one hit rather than in pieces. Ring us with everything you need done and we will price it as one visit.
