The fence has to suit the section, not the other way round

Most home fencing enquiries start the same way: the old fence has had it, or a new neighbour has arrived, or the dog has worked out where the gap is. What you should get before anything else is somebody standing on the ground looking at it with you.

That matters more in Dunedin than in most places. A flat Mosgiel section on the Taieri and a Dunedin hillside are two completely different jobs, even for the same style of fence. One needs to cope with wet ground; the other needs stepped panels, a plan for the fall, and often a retaining wall before a single post goes in. We quote what your site needs, and we say so if that is more than you were expecting.

Timber fences

Still the most popular fence in Dunedin, and for good reason. Timber is a natural product, it takes stain or paint, and it gives you almost total freedom on design - solid paling for privacy, a lattice or slat top to let light through, capping and posts to match the house, or a horizontal slat fence if you want something more modern. It is also the easiest fence to alter later when you extend a deck or move a gate.

Where timber needs care is at ground level and in the fixings. Treated posts, the right depth, and galvanised or stainless fixings are what decide whether the fence holds up for the next fifteen years. That is where a cheap fence and a good one part company, and it is not something you can see from the footpath on day one.

Colour steel fence panels

Colour steel gives you a solid, low-maintenance privacy fence with no boards to warp, split or need repainting. It suits a Dunedin section well because it sheds water rather than soaking it up, and it comes in a range of colours that can often match your roof and spouting. Good choice for a wind-blocking fence around a patio, or where you want privacy from a neighbouring driveway.

Alloy fence panels

Alloy panels are easy to care for and offer low wind resistance, which is exactly what you want on an exposed site at Brighton, Portobello or out on the Peninsula. They will not rust, they need very little from you, and slatted or picket styles give you a fence that defines a boundary without walling the view off. They also work well as a front fence where a solid two-metre panel would look heavy.

Pool and balustrade fencing

A pool or balustrade barrier is not just a fence - it has to meet the Building Code, including the gate, the latch and the gaps, and it has to be signed off. We build compliant pool and balustrade fencing in alloy, glass-compatible framing and steel, and we will tell you honestly what your project needs before we start. If you have an existing pool fence or balustrade that you are not sure about, get it looked at rather than hoping.

Dog containment fencing and repairs

Dogs find weak spots for a living. Whether it is a new fence designed to hold a digger or a jumper, or the repair of a run they have already beaten, the fix is usually about the bottom 200 mm and the gate, not the height. We do both new dog fencing and repairs to existing fences.

Post and rail

Post and rail suits a farmlet, a lifestyle block or a road frontage where you want the boundary marked and the outlook kept. Two, three or four rail in timber, with netting behind it if you need it stock-proof or child-proof. It is also the fence that most improves how a rural property looks from the road.

Gates that still work in five years

A gate is the part of the fence that moves, so it is the part that fails. We hang pedestrian and driveway gates as part of the fence rather than as an afterthought: braced properly, on hardware sized for the weight, and hung so they still close on their own after a wet winter. If you want an automatic gate, tell us at quote time so we can build the posts and the run to take it.

Repairs, or the whole thing?

We will give you a straight answer. Three rotten posts in an otherwise sound fence is a repair, and we are happy to do it. A fence where the palings are still fine but every post is going is usually a false economy to patch. We would rather tell you that than sell you the same job twice.

Related work you may need at the same time: a retaining wall where the ground falls away, a deck that ties into the new fence line, or raised garden beds. It is one crew and one price if we do it together.
